Five Easy Tips To Improve Your Model Train Layout

Railway modellers are always on the lookout for model train tips that can be easily implemented which will improve their layout. Model train tips that are freely available generally come from discussions with other enthusiasts. We are going to take a quick look at 5 easy model train tips below:

The first of our model train tips involves the building of mountains or hills on your layout. It would be a great shame to go to all the work of building your mountain and then find that the locomotives and carriages that you have are actually too tall to go through the tunnel. The best thing to do here is to test that the engines run through the tunnel before applying the paper mache to the chicken wire frame.

Next on our list of model train tips also involves the tunnels through the mountains. To make these tunnels look realistic they do need to be darkened on the inside. This will mean that you should line the inside of the tunnel, that is viewable, and then paint it black.

Another of our model train tips is that if you want that added realism then you should ensure that accessories that you place on the layout such as the cars and all of the buildings are of the correct period for the set you are running. For instance having a steam locomotive running through a beautiful countryside scene would be ruined if it ended up at a modern day station.

Applying decals can be a fiddly job and may require some practice so the next of our model train tips is really for novices and that is to apply your decals to gloss finished items rather than a matt ones. This is because the gloss will enable you to manoeuvre the decal into position more easily than a matt finish where you have to get the placement spot on your first go.

The last of our model train tips is that you should join your local railway enthusiast club and discuss your layout with the members there. You will get lots of tips from the members which will help you to improve your model train layout. Just imagine what you can learn from going to these meetings and discussing your issues with other members and even better you may be able to pass on some of the model train tips that you have learned to the old hands and really get a name for yourself!
