Starting Your Hobby with Hornby Model Trains sets

Hornby have been the market leader in model trains for over 50 years so you know that you will be getting a quality product when you purchase their products. For a beginner, therefore, the purchase of a set of Hornby model trains can be an excellent way of starting out in this hobby. A typical starter set will include a basic oval track with a small siding, a power supply, locomotive, a trakmat and carriages or wagons. These sets are normally good value as they are usually seen as a loss leader and retail at a discount to the prices of each of the components.

Hornby model trains are ‘OO’ scale which is 1/76th of actually size. In this scale if you would like to have a set that has an oval and an inner track then you would normally be looking at a space of at least 6 x 4 feet to run your model trains layout. With this in mind it is no surprise to see that these are approximately the dimensions of the Hornby trakmat that is supplied with the set. Of course if you do not have this sort of room available then you could look to have a layout which is thin and long but in that case the curves that are included in the Hornby models trains set will be largely surplus to requirement and therefore it may be beneficial to buy separates to start your layout.

The power controller that you get with your set will be a traditional analogue controller and this should be fine for the model trains that you will be running on you Hornby trakmat but if you decide that you want to have more control over individual locomotives and or you are looking to make your layout more sophisticated then it is likely that you will want to upgrade to a Digital Command Control unit. After a while you will want to start to expand on your model trains starter set and Hornby do a good range of expansion packs. There are a number of track packs which are specifically designed to go onto the Hornby trakmat and will allow you to have some extra flexibility with the running of your model trains. In addition to the track pack there are also some accessory packs so you can start to populate your layout with platforms, waiting rooms, sheds and much more.

Of course, with the extra track in place then you may wish to add some more Hornby model trains to your layout. If you can find a Toy Collector Fair or exhibition that is due to take place in your vicinity then this is a good place to pick up some bargains and the range of Hornby model trains that are available at these fairs are normally greater (and cheaper) than you can get from your average model shop.
