Model Railway Prototype

Advantages Of The Modelling To A Prototype

Constructing a  model railway layout  is a popular hobby for many people. Typically their model railway layout starts out as a simple loop with some sidings within an area 4' by 6'. This space is big enough for a decent model railway layout to be constructed but if your gauge is 'OO' or 'HO' then there are some limitations to what you can do and potentially it can get a bit boring just to have the trains going round and round the track. So what can be done to make the model railway layout more interesting?

Well if you think about it, real trains generally go from point A to point B or work on a yard. So why not construct a model railway layout that mirrors the function of a shunting yard or a mining town with the trains being used to move the mined minerals to  industrial centres. You can often find real life locations that you can use as the prototype for constructing your own layout.

The first thing to do is to decide on what type of layout that you wish to develop and then you can try and find details of some real life examples that you can use as prototypes.  You should be able to find some reference books in your local library or you could visit the next toy fair or railway show that is in your vicinity and pick up some second hand books on your preferred prototype. You could also consider the historical accuracy of your layout. Many enthusiasts will decide that their model railway depicts a certain era and then they will ensure that the trains, wagons, carriages, buildings and other scenery all fit in with the correct period.

Once you have decided on  your prototype and period then you can prepare a rough sketch of how your model railway layout is actually going to look. You may find it useful to use some software for this so that you can visualise how your layout will look and you can even model your scenery and buildings within the software so that you can see how close your design is to your prototype. The great thing, now, is that once completed your trains will be put to work in the yard and then it will operate in the same manner as your prototype. You will have to deliver its load to the various locations and then come back to reload at a later stage. Your model railway now is now a proper working model and this will make the operation of the model railway layout a lot more interesting.

Model railway prototypes are, therefore, great for giving you ideas on how to set up and operate your layouts. You model railway layout will become more realistic and so will the way that you operate your trains. By using a prototype you can model a specific era, location or indeed locations themselves and then run the trains in the same manner that they would have actually run. This prototyping adds an extra dimension to a model railway layout and keeps the enthusiast interested in the project.
