Model Train Scenery

Adding Scenery to Make Your Model Train Layout Look Realistic

Adding model train scenery to your layout is one of the main things that really help your set come to life. It is that touch which helps to take you out of the design and woodwork phase and helps to make your layout look real. It should be noted that are some pitfalls that can occur when adding your model train scenery so we will look at some here.

When you are you ready to start adding your model train scenery you should ensure that you take care over it and you shouldn’t rush the placement of your scenic reliefs just to fill the open space.  This is going to be one of the key aspects that really add realism to your model train layout so you should make sure that the scenery used is as realistic as possible and positioned in the most realistic places. For example it may look slightly unrealistic if on a flat layout a hill was positioned just so that you could fit in a tunnel.  Whilst tunnels may be a nice effect to have on a layout it would be better to consider that hills and mountains would normally exist in ranges and thus you would need more than one to add that level of realism to your model train scenery. There are a number of ways of creating the scenery for your model train.  A popular method is to use expanded polystyrene or styrofoam as a base for creating the base of for the model train scenery. It is possible to cut through this with a hot wire so that you can mould it into shape and then lay the pieces on top of each other to build up simple basic scenery for mountains and for raising your buildings that are positioned around your model train track. You can also buy some pre cut polystyrene pieces such as risers which will elevate your track to another level.

Another method of making your model train scenery is to buy a scenery mat. The mat looks a bit basic on its own but if you use scrunched up paper beneath the mat then you can build up hills and mountains and add that authenticity. A more traditional method of building up the model train scenery is to use chicken wire or aluminium wire and some wood to build a frame and then use papier mache to create a foundation upon which plaster can be laid. Once this is complete then you can texture your model with dyed sawdust or a purchased mix to represent the grass.

Other scenery that you can consider for your model train layout may include viaducts, tunnels, roads, water features, trees, fences and many other man made buildings such as stations, docks and busy stations. Clearly a lot of thought needs to go into the planning of your model train scenery but with that forethought it is possible to ensure that your layout is given that realistic look by the special attention that you give to the production and placement of your model train scenery.
