Model Train Site

Choosing The Best Site For Your Model Train Layout

There a number of options as to which site you are going to use for your model train layouts.  You can use your spare room,  loft,  garage, garden shed and even your garden as a landscape to run your model train site.

One of the most popular places for a model train site is in the spare room in the house.  A spare room is ideal as you can hide yourself away from distractions and work on your layout with minimal interference.. The main downside of having your model train site in the spare room is that it is usually the smallest room in the house so you may have to choose a smaller set or a scale as you originally intended and where exactly do you put the clutter that congregates in the spare room like magic.

An alternative for your model train site to the spare room is the loft space in your house. Many houses have a loft space which is sufficient for a person to stand in quite comfortably so it is reasonable to think about utilising the space for your model train site. Of course you will need to do quite a bit of work to the loft first as the floorboards and walls may need to be installed. Once that is complete, however, you should have a large site in which to build your model train layout.

A lot of houses these days have a garage attached and if you can bare to leave your car outside then your garage would make a perfect model train site.  The garage is usually spacious and can accommodate a large layout. If you can’t stand the thought of leaving your car outside in the elements then you could consider constructing your model train site on a table which can be hoisted up to the roof. You could complete the table with collapsible legs so that they can be pushed up out of the way and the set is almost hidden except when it is being used.

The garden shed (or indeed sheds) is another popular model train site. You can build your layout inside a shed and then should you get to the point where you need to expand you can extend your shed by removing one wall (or part of a wall) and then adding another shed to one side to make a double length shed.

Another option to consider is that the best place for your model train site may actually be in your garden. You can build special features such as bridges for your train to navigate it’s way around your garden. Typically a garden layout is made for Garden Scale trains but you can also run HO or OO scale trains around your garden and you can plant small bonsai type trees around the route to enhance the realism.

So you can see there are many different options for you to consider when deciding where your model train site should go. Each one has its pros and cons and really the best one to choose all depends on what you want to get out of your model train site.
